‘Sail into Life’ Programme  - Health Education

The ‘Sail Into Life’ programme is a residential 4-day placement, for up to 5 people. We start at 9am on Monday morning and run through to 5pm on Thursday evening, offering 3 nights on board our yacht and delivering a real experience of life afloat. ‘Sail Into Life‘ is delivered to both adult groups and groups of young people, with groups assembled according to individual’s ages and requirements.

The days entail a mixture of sailing around Carrick Roads and onboard psychological education workshops, based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Mindfulness. The workshops aim to focus on ways we can respond to situations, breaking often habitual unhelpful patterns of reacting. The programme is suitable for anyone experiencing difficulties due to poor mental health and well-being.

Some of the key areas we examine on the Sail Into Life Programmes are:

  • General mental health awareness
  • Anxiety management
  • Living with depression

Veterans Programme

As part of our commitment to Veterans, we are now working with Combat Stress and the SPVA (The Service Personnel and Veterans Agency) to better support the needs of the veteran community.

As an organisation, we firmly believe that access to our sailing programme can have enormous benefits for veterans.

We can offer:

  • Adventure Therapy – simply sailing with a focus on team building and soft-skill development
  • Sail into Life – our main programme designed to improve well-being
  • Respite – time out with an emphasis on relaxation

We are developing this project to work with a National organisation who can deliver specific education around the subject of alcohol and drug issues/dependency. This joint working arrangement should be up and running by March 2012, subject to funding and demand.

If you are a veteran and wish to sail with us, we might be able to secure funding for your placement. This could also include travel costs and, where necessary, a B&B either end of the placement. We would need some further information from you to determine whether this is possible.

Emotional Well-being Programme (for children and young people):

The Emotional Well-being Programme addresses key areas in the well-being of children and young people, namely emotional intelligence, building self esteem, friendship, coping with stress and healthy well-being. The full programme is run as a residential placement although there is an option for day programmes, covering specific topics.

A typical day for this programme entails a mixture of sailing and activities (games, tasks, discussions) addressing key areas.

“Take the Helm”

This 5 day residential project is aimed at young people between the ages of 16-19 who are NEET (not in education, employment or training) young people, and is currently OPEN for applications.  The purpose of this programme is to equip young people with additional and transferrable skills, thus supporting their transition into employment, education, training, apprenticeships or voluntary placements.

‘Take the Helm’ is delivered in an informal style, drawing on the latest research for the improvement of well-being, identifying barriers to progression, improving communication skills and achieving sustainable results.

Although the placement with Sea Sanctuary is only five days, the entire support package is spread over nine weeks (where necessary).

Sea Sanctuary is working with the CMN (Cornwall Marine Network) on this exciting project and they are partly responsible for ensuring the outcomes are reached. The CMN can offer support in the latter stages of the programme and are very well versed in supporting young people in their development.

Our service is fully supported by the NHS Mental Health Promotion Service and research into ‘Activity Therapy’, ‘Sailing as a medium for increasing self confidence’ and ‘The effects of physical activity on mental health’, all demonstrate that the type of service we offer really does work. Indeed our own feedback has not only been 100% positive, it has also told us that those who have sailed with us have experienced very real and positive changes to their mental health.
