Sea Sanctuary is an innovative project and is the 1st of its kind in European waters. We will provide comprehensive mental health care to children, young people and adults onboard a 43ft classic yacht. The support will be through therapy, education/training and respite care and will be available to individuals principally within Cornwall, but also the wider UK. Sea Sanctuary will seek to address the very real issue of mental health well-being for those who most need it.
The fundamental difference between Sea Sanctuary and other service providers is that we will be based upon a upon a 43 ft classic yacht suitable for the provision of support and adapted to promote well-being and mental health recovery.
The vessel will be situated in one of the most beautiful and natural environments in England where service users will be encouraged to interact with the natural surroundings whilst engaging with a diverse range of activities.
Concepts based on Psychological theory, underpin the role of Sea Sanctuary as a place where therapeutic change is more likely to occur for the individual or group.
Evidence for our potential use as a community tool is drawn from research relating to 'Activity Therapy', 'Sailing as a medium for increasing self confidence' and 'The effects of physical activity on mental health'. We will offer a range of services that could be delivered across a range of cohorts and highlight Cornwall's unique culture as conducive to the creation of a sea based project in mental health.
The Health Promotion Service in Cornwall has introduced activity projects that have encouraged service users to spend time in the Cornish countryside, engaging in physical activities such as walking and cycling. The success of these projects (Fit for Life; Pedal Back the Years) is illustrative of the feasibility and potential benefits of a project like Sea Sanctuary. This will further encourage service users to connect with the natural beauty and excitement of Cornwall's extensive and breath taking coast line, thus increasing the individual's opportunity to experience well being.
Sea Sanctuary's proposed work is supported by the NHS Mental Health Promotion Service based in Cornwall and our aims and objectives are firmly supported by the Mental Health Foundation (MHF).
We will look at supporting individuals with a range of mental health needs but also look at 'prevention through education'.
